A suspension warning means the vehicle has detected a condition affecting suspension operation. It does not identify the failed part by itself. Read the exact message, check the vehicle’s height and handling, and choose the safest next step before clearing anything.

What the warning means

The suspension control system has recorded data outside its expected operating range or has restricted a function to protect the vehicle. Depending on the model and exact message, height adjustment may become unavailable, the vehicle may remain at normal height, or its operation may be limited.

The warning does not prove that an air spring, compressor, valve block or height sensor needs replacement. The same visible symptom can be produced by different hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical or mechanical conditions. The exact text, warning colour, current height and driving behaviour matter more than a guessed part name.

Follow the message shown in your own vehicle and the instructions in the handbook for its model and year. Dashboard wording and warning behaviour vary, so a general web guide cannot replace the vehicle-specific instruction.

Contact the workshop before driving

If the message is amber, the vehicle remains level at a normal driving height, steering and braking feel normal, no tyre is close to the body, and the display does not instruct you to stop, contact the workshop for advice. A short careful journey may be possible, but this must be judged from the actual warning and vehicle condition.

Stop and request recovery guidance

Do not continue if the display tells you to stop safely, a red warning appears, one or more corners are very low, a tyre may contact the body, the vehicle feels unstable, or steering and braking behaviour has changed. Park on a safe level area where possible and call for advice.

Record what the vehicle is doing

  • Photograph the exact dashboard message and warning colour
  • Photograph the vehicle from the front, rear and both sides
  • Note which corner or axle appears low
  • Record whether normal, access or off-road height was selected
  • Note speed, road surface and recent load when the warning appeared
  • Listen for unusually long compressor operation without placing yourself under the vehicle
  • Record recent battery, wheel, alignment or suspension work

Why this information helps

A restart can change the displayed message or allow the system to make another height attempt. A slow leak may also be more visible after the vehicle has been parked. Photographs and notes preserve evidence that may not be present when the workshop first sees the vehicle.

Do not crawl under a vehicle supported by air suspension, and do not place hands or tools near suspension components while height can change. Avoid repeated button commands intended to force the vehicle up. Repeated operation may add load when the system is already struggling to build or retain pressure.

Why the exact message and colour matter

Range Rover and Land Rover displays have changed across models, generations and software versions. One vehicle may show a general suspension fault, while another may state that only normal height is available, height adjustment is restricted, a speed limit applies or the driver should stop safely. The vehicle handbook and the wording on the display take priority over a generic list found online.

An amber warning usually communicates caution or restricted operation, while a red warning normally indicates a more urgent condition. That broad convention does not allow this page to promise that every amber message is safe to drive or that every model uses identical text. Vehicle height, tyre clearance, steering, braking and stability still need to be considered.

Do not rely on the triangle colour alone. Read every line of the message and check whether a separate speed, stability, brake or steering warning is present. Multiple warnings can result from a shared electrical or communication problem, but they can also represent more than one fault. How to respond to the vehicle you can see

Normal height only

The system may have disabled access or off-road height while keeping the body near normal driving height. Avoid repeated height requests. Confirm that all four corners look even, check for tyre clearance and ask the workshop whether a careful journey is appropriate for the exact model and message.

Extended mode or unexpected height

The vehicle may raise itself when it believes the body is grounded or a wheel has lost support. If the height is unexpected, stop in a safe area and record the display. Do not assume a button sequence from another model will return the system safely to normal.

One corner low after parking

Photograph the vehicle before starting it. Note how long it was parked and whether the corner rises after the engine starts. The pattern can support leak testing, but it does not prove the air spring is the only possible source.

Body very low or tyre clearance reduced

Driving over a speed hump or steering with reduced clearance may allow contact between the tyre and body. Do not test the vehicle on the road. Request recovery guidance and explain which corner is low.

Warning after battery work

Record all warnings and whether the battery was discharged, disconnected or replaced. Voltage and communication faults may need checking, but do not assume every suspension message is only a temporary battery effect.

Warning with unstable handling

If the vehicle leans, bounces excessively, pulls, steers abnormally or feels unstable, stop safely. Mechanical suspension, tyre, wheel or steering problems can exist even if the dashboard message appears to concern height control.

Why a large online fault-code list can mislead

A short code can exist in different control modules, and its meaning can depend on the model, year, diagnostic platform, code status and accompanying data. Search results often remove that context. They can also turn a system-level observation into an unsupported instruction to replace a part.

For example, a pressure-related code does not by itself show whether pressure escaped through a leak, built slowly because of weak supply, was measured incorrectly, or was limited by an electrical condition. A height-related code does not show whether the sensor, linkage, wiring, reference value or physical suspension position caused the mismatch.

What to observe over time

If the vehicle is safely parked on level ground, note whether it changes height over minutes or hours. Compare the front and rear from both sides. A photograph taken immediately after parking and another later can be more reliable than memory. Do not leave valuables or personal information visible in photographs sent to the workshop.

A corner that drops only at access height can behave differently at normal height because the flexible air spring folds differently. A vehicle that stays level while running but lowers after switch-off may be compensating while the compressor is active. A vehicle that does not raise at all may be restricted before any command is attempted. These are clues for the test plan, not proof of a named failure.

Also note external conditions and recent work. A wheel-alignment visit, suspension arm replacement, height-sensor disturbance, flat battery, tyre replacement or lifting operation may be relevant. Do not assign blame based only on timing. Accurate history simply helps the technician decide what to inspect first.

What not to do

Avoid actions that hide the symptom or add risk

Do not work underneath

Air suspension can lower without warning. A jack alone is not safe support. Inspection beneath the vehicle requires appropriate lifting equipment and the correct suspension procedure.

Do not force repeated height changes

Repeated requests can add compressor duty when the system is leaking, restricted or unable to build pressure. One recorded attempt provides more useful information than repeated cycling.

Do not buy a part from a code description

Confirm the vehicle, system and failed component first. Parts, software and calibration requirements can differ even when two vehicles show similar warnings.

Do not erase the evidence

Clearing the code is not a repair

Clearing a diagnostic trouble code removes a stored record or turns off a warning until the condition is detected again. It does not seal an air leak, restore compressor output, repair damaged wiring, correct a loose sensor link or remove play from a control arm.

Erasing codes before recording them can also remove useful context. The workshop may need the exact module, code status, occurrence information and operating conditions to decide which test should come next. A generic code reader may show only part of the vehicle’s diagnostic information.

What can sit behind a suspension warning

Air pressure loss

An air spring, air line, connector, reservoir path or valve may not retain pressure. The location and rate of loss need to be tested because a low corner does not identify the leaking point.

Air supply performance

A compressor may build pressure too slowly, but supply voltage, relay operation, dryer restriction, reservoir filling and a downstream leak can influence the same behaviour.

Height information

A sensor, linkage, connector or wire may provide implausible data. The system may restrict movement when reported height does not agree with expected vehicle movement.

Control and communication

Low voltage, network communication faults or another vehicle system can create secondary suspension restrictions. That is why all relevant modules and battery condition may be checked.

Mechanical suspension

Worn bushes, arms, joints, dampers or mounts can cause poor ride, noise and instability. These symptoms may exist with or without an electronic suspension warning.

Previous repair or calibration

Incorrect installation, disturbed sensor geometry or values outside specification after relevant work may affect height control. Calibration should follow measured need and the correct repair procedure.

What happens after the warning is recorded

The technician should first confirm the complaint and inspect the current vehicle height. Diagnostic records are then compared with battery condition, live suspension data and physical findings. If the symptom suggests air loss, the test path may focus on retention and isolation. If height data is implausible, the path may focus on sensors, linkages and wiring. A harsh ride or clunk may require mechanical play and damper checks instead.

The purpose is not to perform every possible test. It is to select the smallest reliable set of checks that can separate realistic causes. Once the cause and any secondary damage are confirmed, the owner can receive a repair scope based on the vehicle rather than a generic fault-code list.

Why did the warning disappear after restarting?

The condition may be intermittent, or the system may permit another operating attempt after a restart. Disappearance does not prove the fault has repaired itself. Keep the photograph and arrange diagnosis if the warning returns or the vehicle height is abnormal.

Does one low corner prove the air spring is leaking?

No. It makes local air loss one possibility, but the air line, connector, valve control, height signal and physical measurement still matter. Isolation or retention testing can help identify where pressure is being lost.

Should I keep pressing the height button?

No. Repeated commands may add unnecessary compressor operation when pressure is low or the system is restricted. Record the current behaviour and seek advice.

Can a weak battery cause a suspension warning?

Low or unstable voltage can affect control modules and create several warnings, but battery condition should be tested rather than assumed. A voltage issue also does not rule out a separate suspension fault.

What information should I send the workshop?

Send the exact warning photograph, vehicle height photographs, model and year, VIN or registration if available, when the warning appeared, whether the vehicle can raise or lower, and recent battery, wheel or suspension work.
