How We Diagnose and Repair Range Rovers
A visible, evidence-led workflow from the first symptom to post-repair verification and handover.
Why the process matters
Connected systems can produce similar symptoms
A suspension warning may involve air supply, a sensor, wiring, calibration, a leak or vehicle voltage. A drivability symptom can cross fuel, air, ignition, electrical and mechanical systems. A communication fault can be a module problem, but it can also result from power supply, network wiring or another control unit.
That is why the process matters as much as the scan tool. The goal is not to collect the most fault codes. It is to connect the customer’s experience, the vehicle’s configuration, scan evidence and physical testing until the likely cause is supported strongly enough to recommend a repair.
The workshop workflow
Twelve steps from symptom to handover

Customer describes the symptoms
We ask what happened, when it started, whether it is constant or intermittent, what makes it better or worse, and whether another repair or event preceded it.

Vehicle and configuration are identified
Model name is only the beginning. Model year, engine, VIN, market specification, software level and fitted equipment can change test procedures and parts.

Initial condition is recorded
Relevant visible condition, mileage, warning messages, fluid evidence, noises and the customer’s observations are documented before repair work.

Diagnostic scan is used where appropriate
We read relevant control-module information, fault status and available operating data. A stored code is treated as evidence, not a parts order.

Physical tests are chosen
Depending on the symptom, the next step may involve measurements, electrical circuit checks, pressure or leak tests, fluid inspection, mechanical inspection or controlled road testing.

Evidence is compared
The reported behaviour, scan record and physical findings are checked against each other. Conflicting evidence is a reason to test further, not to force a convenient conclusion.

Root cause and repair options are explained
We describe what the evidence supports, what remains uncertain, the proposed repair and any sensible alternative or dependency.

Quote and approval are recorded
The scope, expected price or pricing basis, estimated repair period, proposed part condition and applicable warranty are communicated before chargeable repair work begins.

The approved repair is carried out
Work is limited to the authorised scope. Parts and procedures are matched to the identified vehicle and documented job.

Additional findings are separated
If a material additional fault appears, it is explained with a revised recommendation. It requires separate approval rather than being silently added.

The result is verified
Verification may include inspection, scan review, measurements, adaptation, stationary operation or a reasonable road test depending on the system repaired.

Handover and follow-up
The completed work, invoice, supplied parts, relevant warranty and any remaining observation are explained. If a related concern returns, contact us with the job reference.
Three records, different meanings
Symptom, code and cause are not interchangeable
Symptom
For example, hard starting, a warning message, low ride height, vibration, overheating or poor cooling. It tells us where to begin.
Fault code
It points to a monitored condition or circuit. It may be current, intermittent, historic or a result of another issue.
Root cause
The supported reason for the fault, based on the vehicle configuration and evidence. This is what should guide an expensive replacement decision.
Example principle
Low system voltage can create warnings across several modules. Replacing each item named by a code would not address the shared voltage cause. Testing the power supply first can prevent unnecessary parts decisions.
Approval is a control point
The customer should understand the proposed work
Before repair, the relevant condition and customer notes should be documented. The proposed cost, repair period and warranty should be explained and approved. This is both good workshop practice and reflected in the UAE Consumer Protection Executive Regulations.
If dismantling exposes another failure, the appropriate next step is a revised explanation and approval. The original approval is not permission for unrelated work.

Verification
A repair is not finished at installation
The verification method should match the failure and the work performed.
Visual and physical check
Fasteners, routing, leaks, movement, fluid condition or physical installation where relevant.
Measured result
Voltage, pressure, temperature, signal, alignment or another system-specific value where appropriate.
Control-system review
Fault status, live data, reset, adaptation or calibration only where supported by the repair.
Operating check
Stationary operation or a reasonable road test under conditions relevant to the original concern.
Some symptoms are intermittent or appear only under specific environmental or driving conditions. If the vehicle cannot reproduce the concern, the workshop should state that limitation rather than claim a certainty the evidence does not support.

Choosing the next test
The diagnostic plan should follow the evidence
When the warning is intermittent
We look for the conditions recorded when the fault appeared, whether it returns, and whether live data or a controlled operating check can reproduce it. Clearing a code without understanding it can remove useful context.
When several modules report faults
Common power, ground or communication issues may affect several systems. The priority is to identify shared causes and primary faults before treating every module report as a separate failure.
When a mechanical symptom has no useful code
Not every worn bearing, leak, vibration, noise or internal mechanical issue creates a fault code. Physical inspection, measurements and operating behaviour remain essential.
When a previous repair did not solve it
We need the prior invoice, changed parts and current evidence where available. The aim is to understand the present vehicle condition without assuming the previous diagnosis was correct or incorrect.
Limits and uncertainty
Responsible diagnosis includes saying what is not yet proven
Some testing has a natural stopping point. A symptom may not reproduce, access may require approved dismantling, or one known fault may need correction before another system can be assessed reliably. In those situations, the workshop should explain the evidence reached so far, the next proposed step and its commercial effect.
A diagnostic fee or investigation is payment for the approved testing and professional time. It is not automatically a promise that every intermittent or hidden fault will be fully identified in one visit. Any chargeable diagnostic stage should still be explained and approved before it is carried out.
We do not use uncertainty as a reason to authorise unlimited parts replacement. If the evidence supports only a narrower next test, that is the decision we should present.
Road tests and controlled operation
Testing should be connected to the job
A reasonable road test may be needed to reproduce a vibration, monitor temperature or pressure, assess shift behaviour, confirm ride height or verify a repair. Stationary operation may be more appropriate for another system. The chosen method should be relevant to the concern and handled with appropriate care.
Before
Relevant visible condition, warning state and the test objective are understood.
During
The vehicle is operated only as reasonably required to gather or verify evidence.
After
The result is compared with the original symptom and recorded in the handover explanation where useful.
Handover
The record should make the work understandable later
A useful handover identifies the completed service and supplied parts, including whether a part is new, used or reconditioned where relevant. It also records the applicable warranty and any material observation or declined recommendation.
