The correct fuel for a Range Rover is the fuel specified for its exact engine, model year and market, confirmed by the filler label and matching handbook. For a gasoline engine, check the required octane rating and whether it is expressed as RON or AKI. For a diesel engine, use the specified diesel fuel. A trim name such as Autobiography does not establish either requirement.

Higher octane means greater resistance to knock. It does not automatically mean more detergent, less contamination, better summer evaporation behavior or lower running costs. Start with compatibility, then assess any performance or economy concern separately.

If the wrong fuel was added, do not start the engine

If gasoline has been put into a diesel vehicle, diesel into a gasoline vehicle, or another fluid into the fuel tank, stop refueling and seek qualified assistance. Do not switch on or start the vehicle to move it away from the pump, and do not try to dilute the mistake by topping up. Tell the station staff and arrange safe assistance.

If you have already driven, stop as soon as safely possible, switch off and do not restart. Tell the workshop what was added, approximately how much, how much fuel was already present and whether the vehicle was switched on or driven. Those details change the inspection and recovery plan.

Stop and arrange recovery for severe shaking, a flashing engine warning with rough running, heavy persistent knocking, sudden major power loss or a strong fuel smell or visible leak. An oil-pressure or overheating warning also takes priority over any fuel-grade discussion. Keep ignition sources away from spilled fuel and seek emergency help if there is fire or an immediate hazard.

Land Rover's published refueling guidance includes a no-start instruction after wrong-fuel filling. That document covers a Discovery application; it supports the misfueling precaution, not a universal Range Rover fuel specification or filler procedure.

Find the manufacturer fuel requirements for your Range Rover

Use the filler label and the handbook selected for the vehicle through Land Rover iGuide. Check the VIN privately if the engine, import history or market specification is uncertain. Registration year, trim level and a badge on the tailgate are not reliable substitutes.

Gasoline engines need the stated octane and compatible formulation

Read the actual wording. A recommended grade and an absolute minimum serve different purposes. Some handbooks allow a lower grade when the recommended fuel is unavailable and explain possible effects. Other engine or market combinations may have different requirements. Never borrow that allowance from another model's handbook.

For example, one archived Land Rover fuel chapter specifies 95 RON for its intended application, describes a conditional lower-grade allowance and permits 98 RON as an alternative. It is an example of how to read the distinctions, not a specification for every Range Rover.

If your matching label and handbook establish 95 RON as the required grade, an appropriate 95 RON gasoline meets that octane requirement. Do not infer that an Autobiography badge automatically changes it to 98 RON. If the exact vehicle requires a higher grade, follow that requirement instead.

Diesel variants follow diesel specifications

A diesel Range Rover does not choose between E-Plus 91, Special 95 and Super 98 gasoline. Check the applicable diesel standard, sulfur requirement and permitted blend in its own handbook. Cetane describes a diesel ignition characteristic; it is not another name for gasoline octane.

Do not add gasoline to diesel as a treatment or assume every biodiesel or renewable-diesel product is approved. A diesel exhaust fluid system, where fitted, has its own separate tank. AdBlue/DEF is not fuel and must not be poured into the diesel tank.

Hybrids and imported vehicles still need an exact match

A gasoline plug-in hybrid still needs suitable gasoline whenever its combustion engine runs. Electric assistance does not remove the fuel requirement. Follow its fuel-management and storage guidance rather than assuming occasional engine use makes old or incorrect fuel harmless.

For an imported vehicle with an AKI label, resolve the rating system before instructing the attendant. If the label is missing, replaced or inconsistent with the handbook, have the vehicle identified before filling. Do not settle the disagreement by selecting whichever online model table gives the lowest number.

RON and AKI are different octane scales

RON means Research Octane Number. AKI means Anti-Knock Index and is commonly shown as (R+M)/2 on North American gasoline pumps. AKI averages the fuel's research and motor octane results. A label saying 91 AKI must not be read as permission to use 91 RON.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration's octane explanation describes the two-test average. There is no single exact conversion obtained by subtracting a fixed number from every RON value, because the motor octane result also matters.

Arithmetic example only: a fuel tested at 98 RON and 88 MON would have an AKI of (98 + 88) ÷ 2 = 93. This is not a test result for UAE Super 98 and is not a recommendation for a particular vehicle. Use the manufacturer's corresponding market guidance or confirmed fuel data.

Read UAE pump names after checking the vehicle

UAE gasoline choices commonly use the names E-Plus 91, Special 95 and Super 98. Diesel is a separate product. Emarat lists these gasoline grades and diesel options. Availability should be checked at the station.

What the pump label does and does not tell you
ProductUseful meaningDo not assume
E-Plus 91A gasoline octane grade to compare with the vehicle's RON requirementThat every older Evoque can use it
Special 95A gasoline grade that may match a stated 95 RON requirementThat it is suitable for a diesel or every Range Rover engine
Super 98A higher gasoline octane gradeThat it automatically cleans deposits or pays for itself
DieselA different fuel family for a compatible diesel engineThat any diesel formulation or blend is approved

Give the attendant the confirmed fuel type and grade before filling. Read the dispenser label rather than relying only on nozzle color or the word “premium.” Keep the receipt when investigating an unusual event. Retailer descriptions such as “for performance vehicles” do not override your vehicle's requirements.

Separate octane from detergents, contamination and volatility

Octane is about knock resistance

Knock is abnormal combustion involving uncontrolled ignition of part of the mixture. It is not simply a statement that all lower-octane gasoline is dirty or burns badly in every engine. Pre-ignition, which begins before the intended spark, is a different abnormal-combustion mechanism. Do not use the terms as interchangeable diagnoses.

An engine's knock-control strategy may adjust ignition timing when needed. That protection has limits and does not authorize fuel below the specified requirement. An older model year alone does not establish that knock-sensor support is absent. Persistent knocking needs diagnosis even when the correct fuel has been used.

Detergent performance is a separate property

Deposit-control additives are part of a fuel's formulation. The octane number does not disclose the detergent package or prove that one grade contains more cleaning additive than another.

For a clear example of the distinction, the TOP TIER fuel program requires its gasoline performance standard across participating retailers' octane grades, while allowing additional additives in particular products. This does not establish that a UAE station participates or identify its exact additive levels. It shows why detergent performance and octane should be checked separately.

Do not assume Super 98 will clean a dirty injector or remove existing intake-valve deposits. A deposit concern needs evidence and a suitable repair method. Fuel-system cleaning is not automatically due because an owner previously used a lower, but permitted, grade.

Contamination is not an octane category

Water, incorrect fuel or other contamination can cause problems regardless of the intended pump grade. An invoice showing a higher-octane product does not prove that every fuel-system component is healthy. Equally, using a lower permitted grade does not prove the fuel was contaminated.

If contamination is suspected, preserve the receipt and event details. Let the workshop assess whether safe sampling or testing is appropriate. Do not siphon fuel, open a pressurized line or use smell and appearance alone to declare a tank safe.

Volatility describes evaporation behavior

The EPA's volatility explanation identifies vapor pressure as a measure related to gasoline evaporation. It is a different property from octane. The source's U.S. regulatory limits are not UAE specifications.

You cannot conclude from “98” alone that a fuel evaporates less, prevents vapor lock, cools the engine or resists all summer problems. A hot-weather starting or running complaint may need fuel-pressure, cooling, air-management or electrical checks. Choosing a higher grade does not repair those faults.

Does higher octane save money in Dubai?

First meet the vehicle's fuel requirement. Then distinguish a possible performance benefit from a proven saving. The U.S. Department of Energy's octane guidance explains that benefits above the required grade depend on the engine and operating conditions. There is no defensible universal improvement percentage for all Range Rovers.

Compare cost per distance using the actual price paid and measured consumption. Avoid estimates based only on the dashboard's distance-to-empty display, which changes with recent use.

Fuel cost per 100 km = consumption in L/100 km × price in AED/L.

Illustrative cost calculation, not current UAE prices or a vehicle test
ExampleConsumptionAssumed priceCost per 100 km
Permitted grade A12.0 L/100 kmAED 3.00/LAED 36.00
Permitted higher grade B, unchanged consumption12.0 L/100 kmAED 3.20/LAED 38.40
Grade B with a hypothetical measured reduction11.2 L/100 kmAED 3.20/LAED 35.84

In this example, grade B would need consumption below 11.25 L/100 km to cost less than grade A. That threshold is arithmetic, not an expected result. Never test an unapproved grade to try to achieve a saving.

A useful fuel log records liters added, kilometers traveled, price paid and comparable fill levels over several refills. Note traffic, AC use, idling, route, load and tire pressures. Do not overfill to force identical levels. With a plug-in hybrid, record charging energy and electric driving as well; a low gasoline reading alone is not total energy cost.

One improved tank can reflect a different route or less traffic. A worsening trend can reflect driving conditions or a fault. Neither establishes the fuel grade as the cause without a fair comparison.

What to do if the engine feels different after refueling

The timing is useful evidence, but “after refueling” does not prove “caused by octane.” Confirm what was dispensed, then assess the symptoms. Do not keep driving through severe symptoms while waiting for the tank to empty.

  1. Preserve the event details. Keep the receipt, station and pump information, time, grade and volume. Note when the symptoms began and any warning text.
  2. Separate wrong fuel from a lower gasoline grade. Gasoline in diesel needs a different response from gasoline that is below a recommended grade. Neither should be resolved by a generic internet top-up formula.
  3. Read the exact vehicle guidance. If the gasoline grade is below the requirement, obtain advice before further use. Do not rely on knock control or the absence of a warning.
  4. Preserve diagnostic evidence. Do not clear codes or disconnect the battery merely to remove a light. A workshop should save relevant codes and fault conditions before testing.
  5. Approve a finding-based repair. Fuel pressure, ignition, air leaks, sensor data, mechanical condition or fuel sampling may be relevant. The test result should justify cleaning or replacement.

If rough running or misfires develop after refueling, diagnose the cause before replacing coils, plugs or injectors. A change in engine-control adaptation is not the same as a fault requiring ECU reprogramming.

Practical fuel care without unnecessary treatments

Use a suitable fuel from a reputable retailer, keep required maintenance current and investigate leaks or changed running behavior. Correct fuel choice does not extend the manufacturer's oil, filter or other service intervals by itself.

Do not add an octane booster, injector cleaner or other treatment as a universal precaution. Check manufacturer approval and establish why a product is needed. The archived Land Rover fuel chapter linked above specifically limits fuel-cleaning products; a bottle should not replace diagnosis.

For long storage or a hybrid that uses little gasoline, follow the exact handbook's fuel-management instructions. No universal number of days or months is supplied here. Fuel age, storage conditions and the vehicle's system matter.

The practical decision: confirm the fuel family and requirement, read the rating scale correctly, and separate an octane choice from contamination or a mechanical fault. Pay for a higher grade when the vehicle requires it or a valid comparison supports your reason, not because a trim badge promises cleaner fuel.

Range Rover fuel questions

Does every Autobiography need Super 98?

No. Autobiography is not one engine specification. Check the exact engine, model year, market and filler label, then use the matching handbook.

Is 91 AKI the same as E-Plus 91?

No. AKI and RON use different rating conventions. Match the vehicle's requirement to the local RON information instead of choosing by the number alone.

Can Special 95 be used in a diesel Range Rover?

No. Special 95 is gasoline. A diesel engine needs its specified diesel fuel. If gasoline has been added by mistake, do not start the vehicle and seek qualified assistance.

Does a clear dashboard prove the fuel is suitable?

No. A warning may not appear immediately, and compatibility is determined by the specification. Do not use the lack of a warning as permission to continue with known incorrect fuel.

Can I alternate between 95 and 98?

Only if both products meet the exact vehicle's fuel requirements and formulation limits. Do not use alternating grades or a guessed mixture to bypass a higher minimum requirement.

Should I switch to 98 every summer?

Follow the vehicle's stated requirement and any operating-condition guidance. Dubai heat alone does not create a universal seasonal upgrade rule or prove that one grade prevents vapor lock.

Does a remapped engine keep the original fuel requirement?

Do not assume so. Identify the installed calibration and obtain its documented fuel requirement and supporting information. A performance modification does not make unsuitable fuel safe or remove the need to diagnose an existing fault.
