A wet carpet after a car wash does not identify the leak. Water can enter through a damaged seal, glass bond, body joint or a roof drainage fault, but an AC drain problem can produce similar dampness. The useful repair is to locate the entry path, assess affected wiring and dry the carpet backing before replacing parts.
If water is near electrical equipment, controls behave abnormally, or you notice smoke, heat or a burning smell, stop using the vehicle and arrange professional assessment or recovery. Do not repeatedly switch the ignition on to see whether the warning disappears. Keep people away from smoke or sparking and contact emergency services if there is an immediate fire risk.
What to do when you find water inside your Range Rover
End the wash and move away from the water jet. If the vehicle is already safely parked, leave it there while you assess the visible situation. Photograph the wet area and warning messages without powering systems just to obtain a picture. Note when the cabin was last dry, whether the AC was running, and whether the windows and roof were fully closed.
Remove loose wet floor mats if this is safe and does not involve touching wiring. Blot accessible surface water. Do not remove seats, unplug connectors, pull fuses, probe wiring or disconnect batteries using a generic internet procedure. Seats may contain airbag connections, and the correct isolation sequence depends on the vehicle. Plug-in hybrid equipment adds high-voltage precautions. Do not connect a charger where water may have affected the charging equipment or electrical system; seek qualified advice.
| What you find | Why it matters | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Standing water near wiring, new electrical faults, smoke or abnormal heat | Electrical damage or unsafe system operation may be present | Stop use. Arrange assessment and recovery rather than a test drive |
| Damp carpet with no obvious warning | Hidden backing and nearby connectors may still be wet | Arrange prompt inspection. A dry dashboard does not establish that driving is safe |
| Water outside beneath the vehicle after AC use | Normal condensate is possible, but the location and fluid still need identifying | Check whether the cabin is wet and report unusual loss, odor or warnings |
Separate wash water from coolant and AC condensate
The timing of the discovery is useful evidence, not proof of its cause. Water trapped from an earlier rain event may become visible when the vehicle moves. AC operation during a wash can also coincide with a blocked, disconnected or incorrectly positioned condensate drain.
- Exterior water ingress: dampness follows a particular wetting area, with a traceable route from outside to inside.
- AC condensate: dampness may follow AC use even in dry weather. The workshop checks the correct evaporator drain arrangement.
- Coolant leakage: coolant loss, unusual odor, residue or a heater-related leak can be relevant. Color alone is unreliable. Never taste a fluid or open a hot cooling system.
- Other sources: spilled drinks, a wet load or washer-fluid plumbing can also need consideration.
JLR bulletin LTB00596NAS3 describes damp footwells and possible audio amplifier contamination from an incorrectly located climate-control drain tube on specified North American Range Rover LG and Range Rover Sport LW vehicles. It is a useful example of an alternative cause, not a diagnosis for every Range Rover or UAE vehicle. Applicability must be checked against the VIN and current workshop information.
Where wash-water leaks can start
The first wet patch is often where water collects, rather than where it enters. Trim, carpet backing and body channels can carry water away from the original opening. Record both the highest fresh trace and the lowest pooled area before cleaning away the evidence.
Doors, windows and glass bonding
A damaged seal, poor door alignment or disturbed inner sealing barrier can allow cabin entry. Some door designs manage water inside the outer door structure through drainage paths. Seeing water in that area does not automatically prove that the outer weatherstrip needs replacement. The issue is whether water follows the intended route and stays outside the passenger compartment.
Windshield or fixed-glass leaks require inspection of the actual bond and surrounding bodywork. Previous glass replacement or collision work is relevant history. Smearing general-purpose sealant around visible trim can hide the route without correcting the joint.
Roof equipment, drains and body joints
A fixed panoramic glass roof and an opening roof do not necessarily have the same sealing or drainage system. Range Rover, Sport, Evoque and Velar generations also differ. Identify the fitted roof before suggesting a drain repair. Scuttle areas, body seams, grommets and rear openings may need checking according to where the moisture appears.
Do not use unrestricted compressed air, wire or a pressure-washer nozzle in a roof drain. A workshop should retrieve the exact vehicle procedure, identify the inlet and outlet, and follow its specified tool, direction and any pressure limit. If an applicable procedure and limit have not been established, do not improvise an air-pressure setting. Excess force can damage or disconnect a tube and create another hidden leak.
How a workshop should isolate the leak
A controlled test should answer which area admits water and where that water travels. It should not soak the whole vehicle repeatedly while electrical equipment remains at risk.
- Document and make safe. Record wet areas, previous repairs and warnings. Assess electrical and hybrid hazards before operating equipment or adding water. Preserve diagnostic information where safe.
- Expose the relevant inspection area. Remove trim only as required by the applicable procedure. Protect connectors and check the carpet backing, underlay and adjacent cavities. Surface dryness is not enough.
- Test one suspected area at a time. Use controlled low-flow hose testing under workshop supervision, with an observer tracing the first entry point. Avoid directing pressure into seals. Start with the relevant lower area before wetting higher sections when that suits the body layout, allowing time to observe each stage.
- Confirm the route and repair it. Match a seal, drain, glass-bond or body-joint repair to the reproduced path. A leak that cannot be reproduced may require further monitoring instead of speculative replacement.
- Dry, assess damage and retest. Verify the repair under the relevant controlled test, check affected functions and document remaining uncertainty before handover.
Moisture measurements and temperature imaging can assist an investigation, but a thermal camera shows surface temperature differences. It does not prove the identity or route of a hidden leak. Physical inspection and a repeatable water path carry more weight than a dramatic image.

Drying the carpet and deciding what can be repaired
Removing visible water is only the beginning. Thick backing can retain moisture after the top feels dry. Depending on the affected area, controlled lifting or removal, extraction, ventilation and monitored drying may be necessary. A brief valet or running the heater cannot establish that concealed material is dry.
Inspect wiring terminals, splices, module housings and connectors within the actual wet area. Their locations vary by model and equipment. Do not assume every module sits under a seat or that every wet connector can be cleaned and reused. Corrosion, damaged terminals, internal water entry and safety-system requirements determine the repair boundary.
A serviceable drain connection or localized sealing fault may be repairable. A split tube, damaged sealing component, compromised glass bond, deteriorated carpet backing or contaminated electronic assembly may require replacement. Follow the relevant JLR repair method for the affected component. Fixing the source and dealing with resulting damage are separate tasks.
If electrical symptoms accompany the leak, a Range Rover electrical diagnosis should connect the failed function to its power, ground, communication and moisture condition. Replacing an amplifier or control module without correcting the leak risks repeat exposure.
What changes a water-ingress repair quote in Dubai
There is no reliable single price for a wet footwell. A simple accessible connection and a concealed glass or body-joint leak require different work. This guide does not publish repair ranges because dated, vehicle-specific estimates with a confirmed scope and VAT basis are not available.
Ask the estimate to separate leak investigation, trim access, source repair, drying, replacement materials, electrical repair and any required programming. Confirm whether the stated total includes VAT, how additional investigation is authorized, and what happens if the first test does not reproduce the leak.
Time in the workshop is not the same as billed labor. Drying and observation may continue between active tasks. Avoid a guaranteed same-day completion promise before the depth of moisture and damage are known. Request photographs of the confirmed path and a clear explanation of the final checks.
Insurance, warranty and preventing another leak
Coverage depends on the owner's actual policy or warranty, the cause, exclusions, claim conditions and any required authorization. A leak after a wash does not automatically qualify for payment, and a workshop report does not guarantee approval. Keep photographs, the wash receipt and repair history, then contact the relevant provider before nonurgent dismantling if its terms require this.
Follow the exact handbook's washing guidance. Land Rover warns that powerful jets can penetrate seals and damage components. Avoid directing pressure at seals, intakes and vulnerable fittings. Check that windows and any opening roof are closed before washing. Ask the wash operator to follow the vehicle's restrictions rather than treating every model alike.
Remove accessible loose debris only where the handbook permits, without pushing it into a drain. Have damaged seals, loose trim and recent glass-work concerns checked. After a repaired leak, monitor the same area after subsequent normal washes and rain. Do not deliberately pressure-test it yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with a wet Range Rover carpet?
A damp carpet alone cannot establish safety. If water may have reached wiring, warnings appear, controls behave incorrectly or there is heat or smoke, stop use and arrange assessment or recovery. Have hidden moisture assessed even when no warning is visible.
Does water after a car wash mean the sunroof drain is blocked?
No. Glass bonds, seals, body joints, door water management and AC drains can create similar symptoms. Confirm the fitted roof and reproduce the entry route before choosing a repair.
Can I clear the drain with compressed air?
Only an applicable vehicle procedure can establish whether compressed air is permitted and at what limit. There is no universal safe pressure for every Range Rover drain. Do not improvise a pressure or push wire through the tube.
Why is the carpet wet when it has not rained?
AC condensate drainage, coolant leakage, earlier trapped water or an interior spill may be responsible. The fluid and route need identifying; dry weather does not prove an AC fault.
Will drying remove every electrical problem?
No. Drying does not reverse corrosion or prove that a connector or module remains serviceable. The affected components need inspection and functional verification under the correct procedures.
What to keep from the inspection
Keep the identified entry point, evidence of the repair, drying results and a list of affected components. The useful outcome is a corrected source and an assessed cabin, not just a dry-looking carpet. For a workshop assessment in Al Quoz 4, Dubai, have the model, year, wet-area photographs and wash or rain history ready.
